Consent

In the Realm of CORE VALUES

🌈 1: Read some powerful books to familiarize yourself with the language of informed consent and the Wheel of Consent. 🌈

Books

  • The Art of Giving & Receiving – by Betty Martin: The book on the Wheel of Consent. Marvelously open and welcoming prose style, clearly breaking down her concepts in order to help her readers construct a new idea of what touching is—and, by extension, sex and all issues of consent.
  • Ask – Building Consent Culture – by Kitty Stryker: Violating consent isn’t limited to sexual relationships, and our discussions around consent shouldn’t be, either. Examine how a cultural politic centered on consent can empower us outside the bedroom, whether it’s at the doctor’s office, interacting with law enforcement, or calling out financial abuse within radical communities.
  • Consent Laid Bare – by Chanel Contos: Sex, Entitlement, and the Distortion of Desire. A message of fostering empathy that is especially urgent in the face of rising rates of toxic messaging of all types in our global culture.

🌈 2: Make a shift to using consent-based language in your relationships. For example, try asking, ‘Are you open to a hug?’ instead of ‘Can I give you a hug?” 🌈

Videos

🌈 5: Learn the language of consent to teach children about boundaries and empower future generations. 🌈

Books

  • Yes! No! A First Conversation About Consent – by Makai Kellogg: Consent is a big deal for 3 to 5-year-old students. As a population who navigates their days around people who exert power — both peers and adults — conversations about consent are critical for building a safe classroom environment
  • Consent (for kids): Boundaries, Respect, and Being in Charge of YOU – by Rachel Brian: Readers will learn about boundaries and how to set them; ways to respect themselves and others; what to do if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe; and much more.
  • Will Ladybug Hug? – by Hillary Leung: Ladybug is getting ready to go on a trip and wants to say good-bye to her friends. . . but will her friends want to receive a hug? Seven Realms loves this one for kids because hugging is such a charged thing in modern psychedelic retreat spaces, where there may be consent practices adopted around touch or not at all. It’s wonderful to see children’s resource about these themes.
  • Don’t Hug Doug (He doesn’t like it) – by Carrie Finison: Doug doesn’t like hugs. He thinks hugs are too squeezy, too squashy, too squooshy, too smooshy. He doesn’t like hello hugs or goodbye hugs… Another great kids book that deals with consent language from the hugging perspective!!!

Card Deck for Teens

  • Things to Know Before You Say “Go” – by Elsbeth Martindale: FOR TEENS – powerful questions before you give your heart away. A structure for introspection and discussion for teens around teenage relationships.
